Adapted from the written work of Australian writer Alex Broun, short film Diary of a Break-Up/Break-Down showcases Cunningham's unique and personal directorial style, as well as his ability to push the boundaries of performance in storytelling. The finished film was completed in Melbourne and is a result of collaborative efforts between Cunningham and talented young Chicago-based actor Rome Bryant.

At the core of Diary of a Break-Up/Break-Down lies a powerhouse solo performance that explores the often taboo subjects of depression in men, as well as sexual expression following the recent breakup of the lead character. Cunningham's directorial vision shines through in Diary of a Break-Up/Break-Down as he employs experimental techniques to convey the inner turmoil of the protagonist. The film takes viewers on an unconventional narrative journey, blending elements of surrealism, symbolism and introspection.
