MONTSERRAT (2025) - COMING SOON TO STREAMING

James Cunningham's short film MONTSERRAT is an intimate portrait of the Australian immigrant experience as seen through the eyes of a lonely tradesman, portrayed by Ecuadorian model and actor Wilson Bazurto.

MONTSERRAT offers a poignant and introspective portrait of the Australian immigrant experience, encapsulated through the daily life of a solitary tradesman. Featuring a delicate performance by actor and model Wilson Bazurto, the film reveals the quiet existence of Montserrat, a young man whose life is marked by routine and loneliness. Wearing his ubiquitous yellow or orange hi-vis uniforms like a shell of his identity, Montserrat's days blend into one another as he navigates mundane tasks in his mostly empty house. The film's observational cinematography captures a rare glimpse into the life of a man overlooked by society.

"Strongly meditative and introspective," says The Monthly Film Festival. "Montserrat's monologues are meaningful, striking and his emotions are very vivid – very well written, with a sad beauty that really makes a marked impact. Cinematography is equally beautiful and meaningful."

Through meticulously captured moments, MONTSERRAT explores themes of loneliness and an immigrant's struggle to find a sense of belonging in a foreign land. Cunningham's film stands out for its intellectual and emotional depth, drawing viewers into Montserrat's world with a subtle, yet powerful narrative. The film's minimalist approach allows Bazurto's performance to shine, creating not just a story about one man but a universal exploration of human loneliness and the search for connection in an over-connected and often indifferent world.
