Fringe Hit The Sheds Announces Sydney Season, Launches Crowdfunding Campaign

After sold-out seasons in Melbourne and Adelaide, James Cunningham’s explosive locker room drama The Sheds is heading to Sydney for the 2014 Sydney Fringe Festival this September. The fiercely independent production — known for its unflinching portrayal of masculinity and mateship in the hyper-masculine world of Australian Rules football — will play a strictly limited season at the New Theatre in Newtown from September 10–20.
To help bring the show to life in Sydney, Presidential Productions has launched a crowdfunding campaign via Pozible, calling on supporters of independent theatre, queer storytelling, and bold new Australian work to help cover production costs. The goal: $5,000 to cover venue hire, technical crew, marketing and travel expenses.
“We’ve had an incredible response in Melbourne and Adelaide,” says writer/director James Cunningham. “Sydney is the next step — and we want to bring this story to a wider audience without compromising the raw energy and authenticity that defines it.”

Set in the change rooms of the fictional Fitzroy Fighters footy team, The Sheds follows star player Darren Anderson, who comes out as gay and soon discovers that some teammates are not as supportive as he expected. What follows is a simmering, real-time drama exploring loyalty, masculinity, and the cost of speaking one’s truth in a traditionally macho environment. The independently produced show has already made waves at Fringe festivals for its bold performances, physicality, and raw honesty. Featuring coarse language, nudity, and moments of emotional intensity, The Sheds invites audiences into a world that is at once familiar and uncomfortable.
Supporters can contribute to the team's Pozible campaign with rewards including signed posters, behind-the-scenes access, and tickets to the Sydney shows.
