Acclaimed Fringe Play The Sheds to Debut in Adelaide This February

Following a powerful debut season at Melbourne Fringe in 2013, James Cunningham’s The Sheds is set to hit the stage in Adelaide for the first time this February. The hard-hitting, all-male ensemble play made waves in Melbourne for its raw portrayal of masculinity, mateship, and the complexities within Australian sports culture. Now, Adelaide audiences will have their chance to experience this compelling production.
Presented by Presidential Productions, The Sheds will run at The Bakehouse Theatre from February 18 to 22 as part of Adelaide Fringe in 2014. The production has already generated buzz among local theatre circles, with audiences and critics alike praising its immersive and emotionally honest approach to storytelling.
“We’re excited to bring this story to a new city,” says writer-director James Cunningham. “Adelaide has a deep connection to footy culture, and we think this piece will really resonate here.”

The narrative centers on Darren Anderson, a leading player for the Fitzroy Fighters, whose confidence in his public persona is shaken by a personal revelation about his sexuality. Believing that his 'coming out' will be embraced by fans and media alike, Darren is unprepared for the repercussions that follow. The play offers an unflinching look at the private world of an AFL locker room, delving into themes of identity, loyalty and the challenges faced by athletes in the public eye.
Acclaimed during its Melbourne run, The Sheds captivated audiences with its gritty depiction of locker room culture, complete with foul language, intense conflict, and unabashed nudity. The production provides a unique fly-on-the-wall perspective that challenges stereotypes and delves into human vulnerability and resilience.
The Sheds is playing at The Bakehouse Theatre. Tickets are available through the Adelaide Fringe website or by calling 1300 621 255. Given the show's previous success and limited run, early booking is recommended.
