The Sheds Scores a Hit at Sydney Fringe

After a successful crowdfunding campaign and months of preparation, The Sheds wrapped its sold-out Sydney Fringe season this past weekend at New Theatre, earning raves from audiences and solidifying its status as one of the most daring new works on the Australian independent theatre scene.
Thanks to over $5,000 raised via Pozible, the production was able to travel to Sydney with its full creative team intact — preserving the raw intimacy and physicality that made the play a standout in both Melbourne and Adelaide. The community-backed fundraising effort was more than just financial support — it was a testament to the play’s relevance and resonance.

The Sheds delivered a full house nearly every night of its September 10–20 run. Audiences were drawn into the tense, sweaty atmosphere of the Fitzroy Fighters’ locker room, where team loyalties were tested by the fallout of a star player’s coming out. The staging was deliberately stripped-back and immersive — just benches, red lockers, towels, and tension — allowing Cunningham’s writing and the actors’ performances to shine.
Critics and audiences alike praised the production for its emotional depth, raw performances, and unflinching realism. “It’s not just a play about football,” one audience member said. With three successful seasons behind it and momentum building, The Sheds now stands as a modern Australian play that dares to look where others flinch. Where it goes next remains to be seen — but one thing is clear: this story has struck a chord.
Presidential Productions continues to support works that challenge convention and amplify underrepresented perspectives.
