Bold New Australian Play to Premiere at Melbourne Fringe

A compelling new stage production, THE SHEDS, is set to make its debut at this year's Melbourne Fringe Festival. Written and directed by James Cunningham, this original play offers an unflinching exploration of mateship and masculinity within Australian sports culture, set entirely in a Melbourne AFL locker room (sometimes called 'the sheds').
Set against the stark and intimate backdrop of an AFL locker room, THE SHEDS delves into the private world of football players, highlighting the unspoken bonds and tensions that define their relationships. The narrative focuses on Darren Anderson, a leading player for the fictional Fitzroy Fighters, whose confidence is shaken by a personal revelation about his sexuality, leading to unforeseen repercussions. Taking inspiration from the Tony-Award-winning play, Take Me Out (Richard Greenberg, 2001) and influenced by Brisbane production The Truth About Kookaburras (Sven Swenson, 2009) – the play examines masculinity in its many forms.
Cunningham, known for his insightful storytelling and minimalist staging, aims to immerse audiences directly into the heart of the locker room experience. "We want the audience to feel like they're stepping into a space that's both private and universally resonant," says Cunningham. "It's about exposing the raw, unvarnished truths that lie beneath the surface of our sporting heroes."
THE SHEDS promises to be a highlight of the Melbourne Fringe festival, offering a thought-provoking examination of identity, camaraderie, and the complexities of modern masculinity. Tickets will be available soon through the Melbourne Fringe website. Stay tuned for further announcements, including casting details and behind-the-scenes insights.
